FAQ

Frequently Asked
Questions

It would help if you enquired about an NDIS recovery coach’s expertise and qualifications when seeking one.

You want to know that they have the skills and capabilities to provide you with excellent service.

The minimum requirements are a Certificate IV in Mental Health or Mental Health Peer Work and at least two years of related work experience.

But it’s not only about the training; you should feel comfortable with them and believe they are the perfect coach for you.

The standard hourly rate for NDIS recovery coaching in metropolitan areas is $85.62 per hour as of July 2021.

NDIS participants can choose to work with coaches who have either learned or lived experience. Peer coaches are coaches who have lived through a similar situation. They are those who publicly acknowledge and incorporate their life experience of mental illness and recovery into their work. Professional Peers can serve as significant role models for hope and show that rehabilitation is possible.

When creating recovery goals, they may walk alongside clients and bring unique knowledge.

The principles govern their peer work practice, including instructions on using their own experiences to create hope and encourage people towards self-management and recovery.
The cost of support coordination under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) can be covered by your NDIS funding. It doesn’t usually require an additional fee. The NDIS provides funding for support coordination to help you manage your services and reach your goals. Get in touch with your NDIS planner or local NDIS office to understand how this works for your specific situation.

Your NDIS counsellor is there to support you in various ways:

  1. Understanding Your Needs: They’ll listen to you and learn about your challenges, goals, and preferences.
  2. Personalized Plan: Together, you’ll create a plan tailored to your needs, focusing on your well-being and goals.
  3. Skills and Strategies: They’ll help you learn new skills and strategies to manage difficulties and improve your life.
  4. Emotional Support: Your counsellor provides a safe space to express your feelings and concerns without judgment.
  5. Progress Tracking: They’ll track your progress and adjust the plan as needed to ensure you’re getting the right support.
  6. Respect and Privacy: Your counsellor respects your privacy and keeps your conversations confidential.

Remember, your counsellor is there to help you make positive changes in your life and work towards your goals.

Your NDIS counsellor should have the right qualifications to provide effective support:

  1. Relevant Degree: Look for counsellors with degrees in psychology, social work, counselling, or related fields.
  2. Certifications: They might have certifications from recognized counselling organizations.
  3. Experience: Check if they have experience working with people facing similar challenges.
  4. NDIS Knowledge: It’s helpful if they understand how NDIS works and its guidelines.
  5. Good Communication: A counsellor should be a good listener and communicator, making you feel comfortable.
  6. Empathy: Choose someone who shows understanding and empathy towards your situation.
  7. Professionalism: They should follow ethical guidelines and maintain confidentiality.

Ensure your counsellor has the right qualifications to offer you the best support on your NDIS journey.
